How will your project impact Oberlin?

The Ninde Collaborative began in 2004 through a community challenge grant by Dick and Nan Ninde of Oberlin, which was matched by hundreds of donors in the Oberlin community, to assist low-income, potentially first generation college students to apply to and enroll in college with the assistance of Oberlin College student tutors. The original goal of the program was to support ten scholars each year in grades 11 and 12, but due to expanded interest, in 2011 the Ninde Scholars expanded to include students in grades 7-10, called Aspiring Ninde Scholars.

Today the Ninde Scholars Program serves 44 scholars, in grades 7-12, with the help of 22 Oberlin College students serving as mentors and tutors to the students. While the program has expanded the number of students receiving services, the funding has remained close to initial funding levels of 2004. The Ninde Collaborative funds only a portion of the Ninde Scholars and Aspiring Ninde Scholars Programs and the needs far exceed the funds currently available.

Ninde Scholars and Aspiring Ninde Scholars are provided support services to meet their goals of college application, acceptance, and attendance. Currently, Ninde and Aspiring Ninde Scholars are supported by the program through weekly tutoring provided by paid Oberlin College students, serving in a one-on-one tutor/mentorship relationship. This year content-specific tutors in foreign languages, science, and mathematics were added to assist students in areas that prove challenging in the high school curriculum.

Oberlin College students who work as Ninde Scholar Tutors participate in monthly training activities, college access workshops with Scholars, and service projects with Scholars. Over 70 percent of recent Oberlin College graduates who have served as Ninde Scholar Tutors have gone on to a career or graduate school program in education or civic engagement. The experience gained by Ninde Scholar Tutors enhances their Oberlin College experience through applied learning and the opportunity to connect with students who are on the road to college themselves.

"I am forever indebted to the Ninde program for physically placing me in educational environments where I can share experiences and knowledge with bright young minds who are seeking guidance and answers just like me."
- Emmanuel Greenberg '15

“This program has helped me realize my love to work with youth in any capacity. That is when I knew I would dedicate my life to educating the next generation of youth, and more importantly the next generation of leaders.”
 - Koryn Lockett '14

Funds raised will provide training of Oberlin College Ninde Scholar Tutors and support for Ninde Scholars programming activities.
