How will your project impact Oberlin?

Ten years ago, my son was entering kindergarten. As a language teacher and linguist, I was curious to learn about the school district’s foreign language program. To my dismay, I found that the Oberlin public schools did not teach languages until high school. Around the same time, Oberlin’s Center for Service and Learning was encouraging faculty to enrich their courses with a community-based, service-learning component. I wondered if my students might like to apply some aspect of their coursework to benefit the larger Oberlin community. My students were immediately on board.  From that, the idea of Spanish in the Elementary Schools (SITES) Program was born, a program that recruits and trains Oberlin College students to teach Spanish at Eastwood and Prospect Elementary Schools in Oberlin, Ohio.

Over the years, the program has continued to thrive and grow. With its 10th anniversary upon us, it gives us the opportunity to engage SITES instructors past, present, and future, reflect upon the progress of the program, and celebrate the new Education Studies Concentration at Oberlin. With your help, we want to bring back six alumni of the SITES program to talk about their experiences after Oberlin. This will allow students and SITES instructors to learn about the possible opportunities that are out there after graduation. The symposium would take place from April 8th to 12th and would include workshops and social gatherings to allow the participants to engage and learn from one another.

Budget:
Travel stipends for six alumni = $3,000
Event planning expenses = $1,000
Total = $4,000

I hope you will consider making a gift to the SITES Program in honor of its 10th anniversary.  If you would like more information on SITES, please visit: http://bit.ly/1xi1Q03

SITES fue lo mejor de mi experiencia en Oberlin. Aprendí un montón sobre enseñanza de español (a la que hoy me sigo dedicando con la misma pasión) y además gané como amiga a una persona excepcional.
