How will your project impact Oberlin?

Oberlin College recently overhauled its sexual misconduct policy to better meet the needs of student survivors of sexualized violence, representing an important step toward ensuring that Oberlin College provides a safe and inclusive environment for its students. However, many Obies feel that additional efforts are warranted to promote an inclusive campus climate, free of all gender-based discrimination and violence; an essential step toward supporting survivors of sexualized violence is to prevent sexualized violence from occurring in the first place. To address these pressing issues, Oberlin students launched PRSM in the fall of 2014.  PRSM is a peer-facilitated, interactive, group-based sexualized violence prevention program that  engages and educates students about bystander empowerment, survivor support skills, obtaining consent for sexual activity, and navigating the ins-and-outs of Oberlin’s sexual misconduct policy.

Since its launch, PRSM’s efforts have received much attention and praise. During the Fall, PRSM successfully trained 800 incoming freshman and 400 student athletes. As Spring semester begins, PRSM is busy scheduling additional trainings and is in the early stages of expanding their repertoire of workshop topics. PRSM also is working in collaboration with the administration toward making attendance of its workshop a requirement for graduation. Finally, PRSM is conducting research to evaluate program efficacy. Preliminary data suggest that, after attending a workshop, trainees report a better understanding of central workshop topics (e.g., consent, bystander intervention) and an increased awareness of on and off campus resources for reporting sexual misconduct and obtaining support. Additional research is underway to evaluate longer-term outcomes of attending PRSM workshops (e.g., engagement in bystander activities)

It is clear that PRSM is having a positive impact on the Oberlin campus climate. However, we need your support! At this time, the PRSM leadership team and workshop facilitators are running this amazing organization on a completely volunteer basis. Leadership team members regularly spend upwards of 20 hours per week each creating materials for workshops and coordinating logistics associated with program implementation. With your support, PRSM will have the financial flexibility to outsource the creation of these labor intensive training materials and, as such, will be able to dedicate their energy toward creating improved trainings, conducting high quality program research, and broadening the scope of trainings to include additional topics linked to prevention of sexualized violence (e.g., substance use)

Please help PRSM rise to its potential and help prevent sexualized violence at Oberlin.
