How will your project impact Oberlin?

Founded in 1874, The Oberlin Review is Oberlin’s newspaper of record and one of the oldest continuously published college newspapers in the United States.

The Review has hosted journalism symposia in the past, most recently in 2011, when it brought 16 alumni speakers to campus. Building on this success, we are planning a new symposium to be held on campus in fall 2015.

Funds will be used to bring professional journalists from under-represented backgrounds to campus, host film screenings, and assemble a panel of Oberlin student journalists to address a range of topics. These include:

  • Issues with “objective” reporting and journalistic conventions
  • Sexist, racist, anti-gay, and anti-trans discrimination in newsrooms
  • Journalism’s role in community engagement and activism
  • Networking and pursuing careers in journalism after Oberlin

The symposium will create a space for Oberlin students, faculty, and community members to discuss these important issues. Additionally, interested students will have the opportunity to learn about pursuing a career in journalism.

We don’t anticipate this campaign to cover the total costs of this symposium and are planning to secure funding from various academic and administrative departments as well as the Student Activity Fund. The funding from this platform will help cover flight costs and a per diem for speakers ($1,500 per speaker), honorariums ($1,000–3,000 per speaker) and film screening costs (approximately $300 per film). Our goal is to bring at least one high-profile speaker and at least three to four other prominent journalists (ideally Oberlin alumni) to campus. However, the amount of funding we secure (and speakers’ connections to Oberlin) will ultimately determine how many speakers we will be able to host.

We hope you will consider donating to our cause. Thank you!
