How will your project impact Oberlin?

The Conservatory Library and Selch Collection contain a vast array of historical musical sources, some of them incredibly popular in their time and now virtually unknown. Next fall, we will present a special weekend program highlighting flute music from 19th-Century France, culminating in a performance of flute repertoire from 1830-1870 which we intend to record and produce as a CD.

A project of Professor Michael Lynn, this will involve students, faculty, and staff from a variety of areas, notably  the Flute Studio, Historical Performance, Music History, and the Conservatory Library with particular help from the Selch Collection. The weekend will include a lecture by flute scholar, Tom Moore of Florida International University (sponsored by the Richard Murphy Musicology Colloquium), a lecture-demonstration on the development of the flute from 1790-1890 by Professor Lynn, and an exhibition of scores, flutes, and other historical materials relevant to the project.

The weekend will conclude with a faculty/student performance of French flute repertoire taken from original editions held in the Selch Collection as well as the private collection of Michael Lynn. Most pieces will be performed on modern flutes though the flutists will be accompanied on the Conservatory's wonderful 1860s Broadwood piano played by student pianists. Much of this repertoire has probably not been played since the 19th-Century.

The final part of the project will to be to produce a high-quality CD recording of the material from the concert. Depending on student and facilities schedule this may be done as a Winter Term project. We also hope to produce an iBook about the project to be distributed through iTunes U. The final products will be of great use to the departments and students involved as well as of great interest to the flute community as a whole. This will be a valuable addition to Oberlin’s media collection.

Donors will receive special thanks, as follows:

$25 - a download code for the recording of the musical performance

$75 - a copy of the final CD

$150 - a copy of the final CD with your name listed in the booklet as a project sponsor

$250 - a copy of the final CD with your name listed in the booklet as a project sponsor and a copy of the beautiful book "The Legacy of Sebastian Virdung - The Selch Collection Pertaining to the History of Musical Instruments"
