How will your project impact Oberlin?

On February 26-27, “Complicated Relationships: Mary Church Terrell’s Legacy for 21st Century Activists,” will take place on the Oberlin College campus. Terrell (OC 1884) was an early Black feminist and civil rights activist, a founding member of the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) and the NAACP, and worked tirelessly across lines of race and gender to achieve a more just and equitable society. Despite disappointments, Terrell remained loyal to Oberlin, struggling with its presidents and deans to reaffirm and strengthen its commitment to the education of Black people and women.

This symposium celebrates a significant gift to the Oberlin College Archives of original documents to the Mary Church Terrell Collection.
In honor of this event, the Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies Institute is raising money for a director’s fund. Donations will allow the Institute to continue programing and education around the issues and concerns to which Terrell devoted her life. Money raised will be used for student and faculty support, curriculum materials and program development. Students and faculty will have the opportunity to think about how today’s activists undertake their work for social justice in a world shaped by the tireless advocacy of previous generations, including Mary Church Terrell. Please consider a donation to honor Mary Church Terrell’s legacy as we move forward today.
